Enhanced checks begin June 15 amid concerns over Boeing 787 safety

India’s civil aviation ministry has announced a comprehensive safety inspection of all Air India Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft, beginning Sunday, June 15. The move comes in the aftermath of the tragic crash of Flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London, which left 265 people dead and only one survivor.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will supervise the enhanced checks and require Air India to submit detailed inspection reports for review. The inspections will target Dreamliners equipped with GenX engines.

Systems to be inspected under new safety protocols

The DGCA directive outlines several critical checks, including:

  • Fuel parameter monitoring and system inspections
  • Cabin air compressor and related system checks
  • Electronic engine control system testing
  • Operational tests for engine fuel-driven actuators and oil systems
  • Hydraulic system serviceability checks
  • Review of take-off parameters

Additionally, Power Assurance Checks must be completed within two weeks, and a new Flight Control Inspection will be implemented. Maintenance logs from the past 15 days—especially reports of repetitive issues—must also be reviewed and resolved promptly.

Backdrop: Air India Flight 171 crash

The decision follows the deadly crash involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that struck a residential building near BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The crash is the first fatal accident involving a 787 Dreamliner since the aircraft entered commercial service in 2011.

Past safety concerns and Boeing’s response

While no direct link has been established, a Boeing engineer raised structural concerns about the 787 Dreamliner in 2024. These issues are currently not associated with the recent Air India incident.

Boeing released a statement saying, “We are in contact with Air India regarding Flight 171 and stand ready to support them.”
