Amit Shah cancels election rallies in Maharashtra, heads back to Delhi

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has cancelled his scheduled election rallies in Maharashtra and is returning to Delhi in response to the escalating violence in Manipur, sources confirmed on Sunday.

Amit Shah, who was set to campaign for the BJP ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections, is now expected to hold a high-level meeting in the national capital to review the situation in the northeastern state.

A team of Central security officers is expected to visit Manipur soon to assess the situation and support local authorities in restoring order.

The move comes after violent protests and mob attacks intensified in Imphal Valley. On Saturday night, angry mobs set fire to the residences of several BJP and Congress legislators, including three BJP ministers, in multiple districts of the region. Among those targeted were Public Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam, BJP MLAs Y Radheshyam and Paonam Brojen, and Congress MLA Thokchom Lokeshwar.

In addition, protesters attempted to storm the ancestral residence of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, though security forces were able to thwart the attempt by firing tear gas and dispersing the crowds.

The violence follows the discovery of the bodies of six people—three women and three children—who were allegedly abducted and murdered by militants in Jiribam district earlier in the week. The killings have sparked fury among the local population, leading to the ransacking and arson attacks on the homes of elected officials.

As a result, an indefinite curfew was imposed across five districts in the Imphal Valley, including Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching. In addition, internet services were suspended in these areas to curb the spread of inflammatory content.

Sources suggest that Amit Shah’s sudden departure from Maharashtra and return to Delhi is due to the growing volatility in Manipur. Though there has been no official confirmation of the reasons behind the cancellation of Shah’s rallies, the sources pointed to the deteriorating security situation in Manipur as a key factor.

Shah is expected to meet with senior officers to discuss the ongoing unrest and formulate a response to the violence, which has already resulted in significant property damage and heightened tensions across the state.

Despite the curfew and internet shutdowns, the situation in Manipur remains tense. On Sunday morning, while some areas saw a brief lull, the overall atmosphere in Imphal Valley remained uneasy.
