Delhi LG wants enquiry into AAP collecting personal data ‘in the garb of schemes’

Delhi Lieutenant Governor (L-G) V K Saxena has directed the Chief Secretary and Commissioner of Police to investigate allegations concerning the registration process under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana. This initiative, led by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), promises women voters in Delhi a monthly allowance of Rs.2,100.

Additionally, the LG has requested a detailed report within three days regarding “surveillance” allegations raised by Sandeep Dixit. The Delhi Police Commissioner has been instructed to examine whether any “unauthorized individuals” are collecting personal information from women under the pretense of providing the proposed financial benefits.

AAP’sreaction to the investigation

Reacting to the directive, former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal stated, “The BJP is upset with the Mahila Samman and Sanjeevani schemes as they are losing the Delhi elections.”

During a press conference, Kejriwal questioned the rationale behind the inquiry. He said, “The BJP is afraid of losing elections. The LG has ordered an inquiry, but I fail to understand what it is about. We clearly stated that these benefits will be provided only after the elections. What wrong have we done?”

LG’s Letter to the Chief Secretary and Police Commissioner

The Principal Secretary to the Delhi LG has issued a letter addressing the Chief Secretary of Delhi and the Commissioner of Police. The letter highlights the AAP’s announcements of offering Rs.1,000 per month to every woman in Delhi above 18 years of age, with a proposed increase to Rs.2,100 per month if the party is re-elected in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections.

The letter emphasizes the need to investigate the involvement of non-government entities in the collection of personal information. “The L-G has desired that the Chief Secretary conduct an inquiry through the Divisional Commissioner regarding the collection of personal details and forms by non-government people. Further, the Commissioner of Police may direct field officers to take appropriate legal action against those breaching privacy by collecting personal information under the guise of offering benefits,” the letter states.

Kejriwal’s accusations against BJP

Kejriwal accused the BJP of attempting to derail welfare schemes in Delhi. “The BJP doesn’t want any welfare programs in the city. If registration is stopped, people will respond through their votes,” he said.

He further alleged that BJP leaders are openly distributing money to buy votes. “We are not distributing any money. We have clearly stated that funds will be provided only after elections. Then what is the investigation for? BJP leaders are trying to buy votes openly,” he claimed.

Referring to an incident involving BJP leader Parvesh Verma, Kejriwal said, “Why is the LG not stopping those openly distributing cash in exchange for votes? This is clearly a BJP ploy to block our schemes.”

The registration drive under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana has become a contentious issue, with both parties trading allegations as the Delhi elections draw closer.
