BJP’s challenge in Delhi: Finding a match for Kejriwal

As Delhi gears up for its 2025 Assembly elections, the political landscape is clear: BJP faces a major challenge against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and its leader, Arvind Kejriwal.

While anti-incumbency and controversies surrounding AAP and Arvind Kejriwal may help the BJP to a significant extent, the BJP’s challenge is that it lacks a local face who can match Kejriwal’s appeal and political acumen as the CM candidate.

All the 3 major contenders, AAP, BJP and Congress

Opinion polls are not decisive; even if some suggest a slight edge for the BJP, they can’t be relied upon in such a crucial election. Kejriwal and AAP know a trick or two to change the tide in their favour, even at the last minute.

History has shown that when a party lacks a towering leader, the best alternative is to offer the voters a compelling reason (hope, vision, or dream, call it what you will) so that it overshadows the CM candidate issue and rallies public sentiment. This is a strategy that has proven effective globally and domestically.

Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) ignited a movement that was not visible till the election results were known. John F. Kennedy’s “We choose to go to the Moon” speech, though not an election promise, inspired generations.

Nearer home, Modi’s “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” galvanized the nation.

Delhi, too, is ripe for such a dream – one that reignites hope and taps into the aspirations of millions living in a city plagued by a plethora of problems, pollution, congestion, and administrative bottlenecks.

But it is important to remember that after using such a Brahmastra, BJP better live up to its promise (substantially) after (hopefully) it wins the Delhi election, to win future elections too.

Why BJP needs such a dream for Delhi

All the parties have promised several similar freebies, cancelling out the effect of these.

Manifestos with long lists of promises are important, but they rarely capture the voters’ imagination. People will remember a hope or dream, not the 172-point agenda.

A hope simplifies complex policies into a single, aspirational goal – one that resonates emotionally and gives the voters a reason to believe in change.

Delhi is yearning for a better quality of life.

The nostalgia for a cleaner, safer, and more livable city of the past is strong, and BJP can leverage this by positioning itself as the party that will bring back that better era, not through incremental policies but through a transformational dream, and yet evolve Delhi into an increasingly modern world-class city.

How about a dream called DELHI?

One possible articulation of this vision could be captured through the acronym DELHI, a dream of a clean, modern, and vibrant capital. This is just a suggestion, and BJP leadership can improve upon it or change it to align with its broader strategy.

This acronym should also lend itself to be communicated to the non-English knowing people; this may not be a major problem.

D(elightful): A city that is not just functional but delightful to live in. From recreational spaces to cultural hubs, the focus is on transforming Delhi into a city of happiness and pride.

E(co-friendly): Addressing Delhi’s pressing pollution crisis through large-scale green initiatives, clean energy, and sustainable urban planning. This will address the health and well-being of the population. Since the BJP (NDA) is in power at the Centre, only the BJP can make such a promise as it has the resources and the opportunity to make it happen.

L(ivable): Affordable housing, improved public transportation, and better waste management to make Delhi more comfortable and organized for all. A livable city means reduced congestion, better infrastructure, and a stronger sense of community.

H(igh-tech): Positioning Delhi as a smart city driven by innovation, digital governance, and cutting-edge technology to improve civic services and efficiency. This will particularly appeal to the aspirations of the youth and tech-savvy electorate.

I(nclusive): Ensuring that growth and development reach all sections of society including minorities, through slum redevelopment, better educational facilities, and enhanced healthcare for underserved communities. An inclusive Delhi is one where no one is left behind.

Why these elements matter to Delhi voters

Pollution and Eco-friendliness: Delhi’s air quality is among the worst in the world. This directly affects the health and lives of all its citizens, especially children and the elderly. By making eco-friendliness a core part of the vision, the BJP can address a concern that will resonate with voters across all classes.

Livability and Infrastructure: Overcrowding, crumbling infrastructure, and poor waste management are daily frustrations. A livable city promise will tackle everyday grievances that citizens desperately want resolved.

Technology and Growth: Delhi’s youth are forward-looking and ambitious. By promising a high-tech, innovation-driven capital, the BJP can tap into the aspirations of this crucial voter segment.

Inclusion and Equity: The middle and lower-income groups and religious minorities form a significant voting bloc. By focusing on inclusivity, the BJP reassures them that growth will not be concentrated in select areas but distributed evenly.

Crafting a campaign around the dream

The beauty of the DELHI acronym is that it is simple, memorable, and flexible. It can serve as a rallying cry, form the basis of slogans, and guide policy announcements.

Imagine a campaign where each letter represents a flagship initiative, with detailed policy blueprints supporting the broader dream.

For example:

  • Delightful Delhi: Restoration of heritage sites, new public parks, and urban beautification projects.
  • Eco-friendly Delhi: Expanding electric buses, reducing emissions, and large-scale tree plantations.
  • Livable Delhi: Affordable housing projects, better drainage, and traffic decongestion plans.
  • High-tech Delhi: Digital governance platforms, 24/7 surveillance, and AI-driven civic services.
  • Inclusive Delhi: New government schools, affordable healthcare clinics, and job-creation initiatives.

Why this approach should work

Appeals emotionally: Dreams appeal to the heart, while policy appeals to the head. Voters remember bold promises and emotional appeals long after the campaign ends.

Shifts the narrative: A grand vision shifts focus from petty politics and day-to-day governance issues to something larger. It makes AAP look like the “old regime,” while BJP positions itself as the party of the future.

Gives BJP a Delhi-specific identity: BJP’s strength at the national level is clear, but it needs a Delhi-specific vision that distinguishes its local campaign from its national messaging.

Gives BJP leadership itself a direction. After winning, the CM, Ministers, and MLAs themselves will need direction. This acronym will give just that direction.

Conclusion

BJP cannot win Delhi by just criticizing AAP. It should be offering a hope that voters can believe in. A single, bold, and simple idea that sparks excitement across classes and communities. This election is not just about promises but about rekindling hope in the hearts of Delhi’s citizens.

BJP must remember: when voters hope, they will vote. And it might just be what will turn the tide. But after winning, the BJP better live up to its promise.
