Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto highlights India-Indonesia ties

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, during a state dinner hosted by Indian President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday, humorously remarked that he has “Indian DNA,” eliciting laughter from dignitaries including Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other attendees.

A personal connection to India

President Subianto shared a light-hearted moment, recounting his recent genetic sequencing test. “A few weeks ago, I had my genetic sequencing test, and they told me that I have Indian DNA. Everybody knows when I hear Indian music, I start dancing,” he said, leaving the room in good spirits.

He emphasized the deep historical and cultural ties between India and Indonesia, noting the influence of Sanskrit in the Indonesian language and daily life. “India and Indonesia have a long, ancient history together. The influence of ancient Indian civilization is very strong in Indonesia, and I think it’s part of our genetics,” he said.

Praise for Prime Minister Modi

The Indonesian President also commended Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, particularly his efforts to combat poverty and uplift marginalized communities.

“I am very proud to be here in India… I came here for a few days but learned a lot from Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and commitment to alleviating poverty and helping the weakest in society,” Mr. Subianto stated, calling Modi’s work an “inspiration.”

Strengthening India-Indonesia partnership

Expressing his aspirations for the future, Subianto wished for continued friendship and partnership between India and Indonesia.

“I would like to see Indonesia and India remain close partners and friends,” he remarked while extending his wishes for India’s prosperity and peace.

Republic Day celebrations and agreements

President Subianto was the Chief Guest at India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations, accompanied by a high-level delegation of ministers, senior officials, and business leaders. A highlight of the event was a performance by Indonesia’s 190-member ensemble band, Genderang Suling Canka Lokananta, representing the Indonesian Military Academy.

During his three-day visit, India and Indonesia signed and renewed five Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering areas such as health, traditional medicine, and maritime security, underscoring the nations’ shared commitment to cooperation in diverse fields.
