In a high-profile enforcement action, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched coordinated raids on Friday targeting Gokulam Gopalan, the prominent producer of the upcoming Malayalam blockbuster L2: Empuraan and chairman of Gokulam Chit Funds and Finance. The probe centers on allegations of financial misconduct, suspected money laundering, and potential misuse of funds.

The ED conducted simultaneous searches at multiple locations, including Gopalan’s Kodambakkam corporate headquarters in Chennai, his luxurious Neelankarai residence, and several other properties in Coimbatore and Kozhikode. The raids yielded Rs.1.5 crore in unaccounted cash and a number of incriminating documents and digital records, which are now being scrutinized.

Financial and chit fund scrutiny

The Gokulam Group has long operated one of the most recognizable chit fund businesses in South India. Over the years, the group has expanded into diverse sectors, including healthcare, hospitality, and film production. However, it has faced multiple allegations in the past over its chit fund operations—particularly concerns about fund diversion and lack of financial transparency.

While earlier investigations did not result in major legal action, this time, the ED’s intervention appears more serious. Sources within the agency suggest the raids are part of a broader investigation into financial mismanagement, with a focus on possible laundering of investors’ money.

Producer summoned, interrogated in Chennai

At the time of the raids, Gokulam Gopalan was reportedly in Kozhikode, Kerala. He was immediately summoned to Chennai by ED officials and interrogated through the night at his office. Sources indicate the questioning revolved around the source of funds used for various group activities and, specifically, the financing of the much-anticipated film L2: Empuraan, starring Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran.

Officials are examining whether any illegally diverted or laundered money has been funneled into the movie’s production. If established, this could cast a shadow over one of the most awaited Malayalam film sequels in recent times and potentially trigger further probes into film financing practices in the region.
