Crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants by Delhi Police

In a significant breakthrough, Delhi Police has dismantled an illegal immigration racket that facilitated the entry of Bangladeshi nationals into India using forged documents. Eleven individuals, including document forgers, Aadhaar operators, and tech experts, were arrested for their involvement in the operation, which included creating fake websites to produce counterfeit identification documents.

How the racket operated

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), Ankit Chauhan, revealed that the suspects forged Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, and other identification documents to assist Bangladeshi nationals in entering India illegally.

“The immigrants used jungle routes and express trains to cross into Indian territory. The accused enabled this through forged documents generated via fake websites,” DCP Chauhan stated.

Arrests and interrogations

  • Two accused, Abdul Ahad (22) and Mohammad Azizul (32), were apprehended by the Hazrat Nizamuddin Police Station team on December 10 and 12.
  • During interrogation, Ahad, who hails from Sylhet, Bangladesh, disclosed that he entered Delhi on December 6 with the help of a Bangladeshi agent while searching for work.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast), Ravi Kumar Singh, said teams had identified over 1,000 illegal immigrants during the crackdown and detained two suspects from Kalindi Kunj and Hazrat Nizamuddin areas.

Ongoing crackdown on illegal immigrants

As part of a larger effort, Delhi Police has intensified its operations to identify and detain individuals residing without valid documentation. A police officer reported that 175 suspected illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been identified during verification drives in outer Delhi.

Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor has directed the Chief Secretary and Police Commissioner to launch a two-month special operation targeting Bangladeshi nationals living in the city without proper documentation. This operation involves:

  • Door-to-door checks.
  • Extensive document verification.
  • Deployment of special teams comprising local police and foreign cells to enhance surveillance and enforcement.

Broader implications

The arrests and identification of over 1,000 illegal immigrants underscore the scale of the issue. The Delhi Police’s efforts highlight a robust strategy to curb illegal immigration and tighten border security, ensuring that such networks are dismantled and those involved are brought to justice.
