Employees barred from temple duties, offered transfers or voluntary retirement

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), the governing body of the Tirupati temple, has initiated disciplinary action against 18 non-Hindu employees for allegedly practicing non-Hindu religious activities despite taking an oath to uphold the Hindu faith upon joining.

Employees barred from religious duties

The TTD Board has decided to bar the employees from participating in temple-related religious activities and has directed them to take transfers to non-temple-related positions. The decision aligns with the board’s commitment to preserving the spiritual sanctity of its temples and religious functions.

Transfer or voluntary retirement for non-Hindu employees

In a recent resolution, the TTD Board stated that such employees would either be transferred to government departments or offered an exit through the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS).

TTD chairman B R Naidu previously assured that he would ensure Tirumala remains a symbol of Hindu faith and sanctity. Following his directive, orders have been issued to take strict action against the 18 employees.

Impact on temple sanctity and devotees’ sentiments

A statement from the TTD Board clarified that these employees had been engaging in non-Hindu religious practices while simultaneously participating in Hindu religious fairs, festivals, and functions organized by the TTD. The board believes this compromises the sanctity and sentiments of millions of Hindu devotees.

Oath of allegiance to the Hindu faith

All temple employees are required to take an oath before the image or idol of Lord Venkateshwara, promising to uphold Hindu faith and traditions when they join. However, the actions of these 18 employees were found to violate this commitment, allegedly diminishing the prestige of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.

Officials tasked with enforcing transfers

A memo issued by the board states that two TTD officials have been assigned to verify the current postings of the 18 employees and ensure they are not assigned to Tirumala, any temple, or any religious program-related work.
