Pakistan faces long-term setback from BSF action, says Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during his visit to Poonch on Friday, said that the Border Security Force (BSF) successfully destroyed 118 Pakistani posts and observation towers during Operation Sindoor, a retaliatory military operation launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.

Addressing BSF personnel at their Unit Headquarters in Khanetar, Poonch, Shah stated that the destruction has severely impaired Pakistan’s border observation capabilities, estimating a recovery period of 4-5 years for the neighboring country.

“BSF has delivered a decisive blow by destroying 118 Pakistani posts and observation towers. Pakistan will take 4-5 years to resurrect them, as their observation capabilities have been crippled for a long time,” Shah said, praising the BSF’s role in the operation.

The Home Minister’s visit, his first to Jammu and Kashmir since the operation Sindoor, included interactions with families affected by Pakistani shelling and visits to religious sites damaged during the cross-border attacks between May 7 and 10.

Operation Sindoor, initiated on May 7, saw the Indian Armed Forces conduct precision strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), targeting infrastructure linked to groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.

The operation was a direct response to the Pahalgam massacre, which Shah described as a Pakistan-sponsored act aimed at sowing communal discord. “We launched Operation Sindoor and destroyed terrorist sites in Pakistan and PoK. This was a befitting reply to terrorists on behalf of crores of Indians,” Shah told residents in Poonch, emphasizing India’s zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism.

The BSF’s targeted strikes, as highlighted in recently released visuals, flattened key Pakistani posts, including Putwal, Chaprar, and Chota Chak, with Pakistani Rangers seen fleeing during the retaliation.

Inspector General, BSF Jammu Frontier, Shashank Anand, confirmed the destruction of multiple terror launchpads in Akhnoor, Samba, and RS Pura sectors, underscoring the force’s operational preparedness. The operation also thwarted infiltration attempts by 40-50 suspected terrorists under the cover of Pakistani shelling in the Sialkot sector.

Shah reiterated that India’s strikes were focused solely on terror infrastructure, avoiding Pakistani military installations or civilian areas. However, Pakistan’s retaliatory drone and missile attacks on May 8-10 targeted civilian areas in Poonch, Rajouri, and other border districts, resulting in 28 deaths, including 14 in Poonch alone. “Pakistan targeted civilian areas, and Poonch suffered the most”. “The world is condemning their actions,” Shah noted, adding that India’s response, which included neutralizing nine Pakistani air bases, forced Pakistan to seek a ceasefire on May 10.

During his visit, Shah distributed appointment letters to the kin of civilians killed in the shelling and reviewed security arrangements ahead of the annual Amarnath Yatra. He also visited a damaged Gurudwara and temple in Poonch, assuring residents of the government’s support. “India will not tolerate any attack on its civilians or armed forces”. “Every attack will be met with precision and accuracy,” he affirmed.
