TN Governor R N Ravi sparks controversy by ending Assembly address midway

Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi stirred controversy on Monday during the State Assembly budget session by abruptly concluding his customary address to the House. Ravi cited disagreements with the content of the address prepared by the DMK government and criticized the regime for “not respecting” the National Anthem.

Governor ends address citing disagreement

Disagreeing with the speech prepared by the DMK government, Governor Ravi stated he could not lend his voice to the content, describing it as a matter of “factual and moral” concern. He asserted that delivering the speech as written would amount to a “Constitutional travesty.”

“If I lend my voice, it would amount to Constitutional travesty,” Ravi said, explaining his decision to skip the address.

National Anthem dispute

The Governor also expressed dissatisfaction over the government’s repeated refusal to heed his advice to play the national anthem at the beginning and end of the Assembly address, calling it a lack of respect for national symbols.

Concluding the speech

The House was convened on February 12 for the customary Governor’s Address. However, Ravi ended his speech within a few minutes, wishing the House productive discussions and offering greetings in Tamil to Speaker M Appavu, Chief Minister M K Stalin, and other legislators. He emphasized that his disagreements prevented him from delivering the prepared speech.

Similar incident in Kerala

This incident follows a similar controversy in Kerala, where Governor Arif Mohammed Khan concluded his customary address abruptly, reading only the final paragraph.

Governor Ravi’s decision has intensified the ongoing friction between the Governor’s office and the DMK-led government, raising questions about constitutional propriety and the relationship between state governments and Governors.
