‘Time to nab criminals who flee abroad’: Amit Shah launches BHARATPOL to aid probe agencies

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday unveiled the BHARATPOL portal, a groundbreaking initiative to provide real-time international police assistance to law enforcement agencies (LEAs) across India. Developed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the portal was launched at Bharat Mandapam, marking a significant step in modernizing India’s law enforcement capabilities.

Transforming international investigations

During the launch, Shah highlighted the portal’s transformative potential, stating:
“BHARATPOL will take our country’s international investigations to a new era. Previously, only the CBI worked with INTERPOL. Now, with BHARATPOL, every Indian agency and state police can connect with INTERPOL, bridging gaps and efficiently combating crime.”

The portal facilitates real-time information sharing, enabling faster access to international police cooperation, crucial for addressing the growing complexity of transnational crimes.

“Our new criminal law and its provision of trial in abstention will ensure they are tried in Indian courts. Once they are convicted by an Indian court. It will be easier to get them deported or extradited,” he added.

CBI’s role as National Central Bureau

As India’s designated National Central Bureau (NCB-New Delhi) for INTERPOL, the CBI coordinates international cooperation in criminal matters. The agency collaborates with LEAs across the country through INTERPOL Liaison Officers (ILOs) at central, state, and union territory levels. These ILOs are further connected to Unit Officers (UOs), who serve as liaisons within their respective jurisdictions.

Previously, communications among the CBI, ILOs, and UOs relied on letters, emails, and faxes, limiting efficiency in urgent investigations. The BHARATPOL portal aims to overcome these challenges.

Key features of BHARATPOL

  • Real-time information sharing: Enables faster international assistance for criminal investigations.
  • Streamlined requests: Facilitates the processing of INTERPOL notices, including Red Notices and other color-coded alerts.
  • Integrated platform: Brings CBI, state police, and other stakeholders together for coordinated responses to transnational crimes.

The portal addresses the rising need for rapid international assistance in cases involving cybercrime, financial fraud, online radicalization, organized crime, drug trafficking, and human trafficking.

Strengthening field-level policing

By providing field-level officers with direct access to international assistance, the portal is expected to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen India’s capability to combat transnational crimes effectively.

Recognizing excellence

At the event, Shah also presented Police Medals to 35 CBI officers for their distinguished service and excellence in investigation, recognizing their dedication to strengthening law enforcement.

The BHARATPOL portal represents a major leap forward in modernizing India’s approach to international policing, aligning the country with global standards for combating cross-border crimes.
