Prime Minister Narendra Modi, known for his penchant for impactful acronyms, drew inspiration from America’s MAGA (Make America Great Again) and introduced MIGA (Make India Great Again)—a fresh vision for Bharat’s development. During Modi 3.0’s visit to Washington, this concept evolved further, merging MAGA and MIGA into a MEGA partnership —a collaboration defined broadly in the US-India Joint Statement

However, the 21st-century partnership is not just about conventional sectors; it is now infused with AI (Artificial Intelligence). Therefore, why not?

AI, dubbed “America + India” during President Biden’s tenure, has become a defining pillar of technological cooperation. While Trump 2.0 recently announced a $500 billion investment in AI, Bharat—though behind in the AI race—is stepping up to the challenge with renewed ambition.

M”AI”GA: Strengthening AI collaboration between the US and Bharat

The recent Modi 3.0 – Trump 2.0 meeting led to groundbreaking progress in AI cooperation between the two nations. A key outcome was the launch of the “US-India COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century.” This initiative is sure to drive transformative advancements across defense, commerce, and technology, with AI playing a crucial role.

To solidify this commitment, both nations will draft a comprehensive AI roadmap by the end of the year, focusing on:

• Joint AI R&D: Encouraging research collaborations between leading institutions.
• Innovation & AI Infrastructure: Expanding supercomputing and cloud-based AI facilities.
• Autonomous Systems & Defense AI: Enhancing cooperation in cutting-edge military technologies.

The announcement of a new ten-year AI framework further highlights a commitment to jointly developing autonomous systems, generative AI, and next-gen computing technologies—marking a deeper convergence of strategic interests. These AI-driven developments underscore a shared vision to leverage technology for global stability, economic growth, and societal advancements.

Bharat’s AI mission: Driving Innovation and Self-Reliance

While Bharat may not yet rival AI superpowers like the US and China, it is making rapid strides in AI research, development, and adoption. A mix of government initiatives, academic leadership, and private-sector investment is positioning Bharat as a rising force in AI innovation.

• NITI Aayog’s National Strategy for AI (NSAI) aims to make Bharat a global AI hub, focusing on healthcare, agriculture, education, smart cities, and mobility.
• IndiaAI: A joint initiative by MeitY, NASSCOM, and NITI Aayog to accelerate AI research, promote AI adoption, and provide high-performance computing infrastructure for startups and researchers.
• National AI Mission (proposed): A multi-billion-dollar investment plan to boost AI R&D, create AI centers of excellence, and enhance AI-driven policy implementation.
