US supports Russia in UN General Assembly Resolution

The United States aligned with Russia on Monday during a UN General Assembly vote regarding the war in Ukraine. The draft resolution, which called for de-escalation, an early cessation of hostilities, and a peaceful resolution to the conflict, marked a notable shift in Washington’s stance. Previously, the US had supported resolutions favoring Kyiv and condemning Moscow. This shift comes amid growing tensions between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

UN General Assembly vote outcome

The 193-member UN General Assembly voted on the resolution titled “Advancing a Comprehensive, Just, and Lasting Peace in Ukraine“, proposed by Ukraine and its European allies. The resolution passed with 93 votes in favor, 65 abstentions, and 18 votes against. Russia’s allies, including Belarus, North Korea, and Sudan, were among those who opposed the resolution in support of Moscow.

India, maintaining its neutral stance, abstained from the vote, reiterating its call for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. The resolution, which received less support compared to previous votes, condemned Russia for the destruction and human suffering caused by the war. It emphasized the need for de-escalation and a peaceful resolution in line with the United Nations Charter and international law.

US also backs Russia in Security Council vote

Following the General Assembly vote, the United States further solidified its stance by supporting Russia during a vote in the UN Security Council. This unexpected move has raised questions about Washington’s evolving approach to the ongoing conflict.

US-Ukraine relations deteriorate under Trump’s leadership

Relations between the US and Ukraine have worsened since Donald Trump returned to the White House last month. Trump recently referred to Zelenskyy as a “dictator” and criticized his leadership, suggesting he should act swiftly to end the war. The comments followed a meeting between US and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia, which took place without Ukraine’s participation.

During the Saudi talks, Trump described the war as “senseless” and emphasized the urgent need for its conclusion. “Russia wants to stop the barbarism happening there. Soldiers are dying by the thousands each week, including many Koreans,” he stated.

US military aid to Ukraine surpasses $60 billion

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Washington has provided Kyiv with over $60 billion in military aid. The prolonged conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy reporting that 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers and 198,000 Russian troops have been killed. The United Nations estimates that approximately 12,500 civilians have lost their lives in Ukraine since the war began.
