Maha Kumbh marks the grand culmination today

Hundreds of thousands of devotees thronged the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj on Wednesday to take the final holy dip of the Maha Kumbh Mela on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri, marking the conclusion of the six-week-long religious congregation.

Significance of Mahashivratri in Kumbh mela

Mahashivratri, which celebrates the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, holds immense religious significance in the context of the Kumbh Mela, a sacred event that occurs once every 12 years. Devotees believe that participating in the holy dip grants them ‘moksha‘ (liberation).

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva played a crucial role in the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), which led to the emergence of the Amrit Kumbh (nectar pitcher)—the very essence of the Kumbh Mela.

Massive turnout for the final dip

The Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati, witnessed an unprecedented surge in devotees:

  • By 2 AM, over 11.66 lakh devotees had bathed in the Sangam.
  • Within the next two hours, this number surged to 25.64 lakh.
  • By 6 AM, the count had nearly doubled to 41.11 lakh.
  • More than one crore devotees were expected to participate in the final snan.

CM Yogi Adityanath’s Wishes

Ahead of the holy dip, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended his wishes to devotees and offered prayers for their well-being.

Hearty wishes to all the revered saints, Kalpvasis, and devotees who have come to take a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam today on the holy bathing festival of Maha Shivratri dedicated to the worship of Lord Bholenath in Maha Kumbh-2025, Prayagraj. May Tribhuvanpati Lord Shiva and holy river Mother Ganga bless everyone. This is my prayer. Har Har Mahadev,” he tweeted.

Rituals at the Brahma Muhurt

A large number of devotees gathered along the banks of the Sangam from midnight, waiting patiently for the Brahma Muhurt (auspicious period for bathing). Many performed their bathing rituals even before the designated time.

Special bathing days in Maha Kumbh 2025

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 witnessed six major bathing dates, including:

  • Paush Purnima – January 13
  • Makar Sankranti – January 14
  • Mauni Amavasya – January 29
  • Basant Panchami – February 3
  • Maghi Purnima – February 12
  • Maha ShivratriFebruary 26

Among these, three ‘Amrit Snan’ were considered the holiest.

Over 65 crore pilgrims attended Maha Kumbh 2025

On Tuesday (February 25, 2025) alone, an estimated 1.33 crore devotees took a dip at the Sangam and other ghats in the Mela area. According to Uttar Pradesh government data, the total footfall for Maha Kumbh 2025 crossed 65 crore pilgrims.

Security and crowd management

With millions arriving in Prayagraj for the final snan, security forces remained on high alert throughout the night:

  • Railway stations, roads, and city entry points witnessed a steady influx of devotees.
  • Law enforcement agencies, including police, paramilitary forces, and disaster response
  • teams, were deployed in large numbers.
  • Surveillance via drones, AI-enabled CCTV cameras, and command centers was used for real-time monitoring.
  • Medical teams and disaster management forces were stationed at key locations for emergency response.
  • Authorities enforced a “no vehicle zone” around the Mela area and in Prayagraj to ensure smooth movement of devotees.

Special trains for departing pilgrims

To accommodate the massive rush of departing pilgrims, the North Eastern Railway (NER) deployed additional trains:

  • 60 trains, including regular, ring rail, long-distance, and special Mela trains, operated until 4 PM on February 25.
  • 25 more special trains were arranged for Mahashivratri to manage the heavy departure of devotees.

Conclusion

The Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj witnessed a record-breaking turnout, culminating in a grand spiritual gathering on Maha Shivratri. As devotees took their final holy dip, the seamless coordination between authorities, security forces, and event organizers ensured the successful conclusion of the world’s largest religious congregation.
