BSF trooper injured in unprovoked Pakistani firing along Jammu border

A Border Security Force (BSF) trooper was injured on Wednesday in an unprovoked firing incident by Pakistani forces along the international border (IB) in the Jammu district. The BSF responded swiftly to the attack, which led to a cessation of firing from across the border.

The incident occurred in the Akhnoor area and marks a significant breach of the bilateral ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan. The timing of the attack is particularly sensitive as Jammu and Kashmir prepares for its Assembly elections, the first in a decade.

A BSF spokesman confirmed the incident, stating, “On September 11, Pakistani forces engaged in unprovoked firing in the Akhnoor area. The BSF responded appropriately, and the firing from across the border ceased. One BSF personnel was injured in the attack. Troops are currently on high alert.”

In response to the violation, security forces maintain heightened vigilance and utilize aerial surveillance to monitor the situation.

The Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are set to proceed in phases, with eight constituencies in the Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban districts, and 16 seats in the south Kashmir districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam, scheduled for the first phase on September 18. Voting in the Jammu, Kathua, and Samba districts will take place in the subsequent phases on September 25 and October 1.
