Communal violence erupts in Nagamangala during Ganapati idol immersion

Tension has surged in Karnataka‘s Mandya district following clashes between two groups during the Ganapati idol immersion procession in Nagamangala town. In response to the violence, authorities imposed a curfew on Thursday and have heightened security to prevent further unrest.

The clash erupted late Wednesday night when stones were allegedly thrown at the procession near a local dargah, igniting violence and leading to the destruction of shops and vehicles. In the aftermath, local Hindu residents staged a protest at the police station, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible.

Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have sharply criticized the Congress-led state government for its handling of the situation. Kumaraswamy condemned the attack, calling it a sign of the state’s deteriorating law and order situation and accusing the Congress government of failing to maintain peace.

“The incident during the Ganesh immersion in Nagamangala is deeply troubling and reflects the complete breakdown of law and order under Congress rule,” Kumaraswamy said. He highlighted that similar violence occurred last year but was not prevented this time due to inadequate police measures.

Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka echoed these sentiments, attributing the violence to what he described as the Congress government’s appeasement policies and vote-bank politics. He criticized the authorities for allegedly neglecting to curb extremist elements, which he claimed could escalate to more severe terrorism in the future.

Ashoka also denounced what he perceived as the government’s leniency towards radical elements, accusing them of receiving undue support and protection. He urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister G Parameshwara to take decisive action against those involved in the violence and restore peace in the region.

In response to the violence, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the Western Zone, MB Boralingaiah, assured that the situation was under control. He stated that the priority is to maintain order and investigate the incident thoroughly to identify and apprehend the culprits.

“Currently, our focus is on controlling the situation and ensuring public safety. We will investigate and address the matter rigorously,” Boralingaiah said.

The unrest has led to heightened vigilance in the affected areas, with police implementing restrictive measures to prevent further clashes. The authorities are working to calm tensions and ensure that such incidents do not recur.
