YSRCP faces setback as two Rajya Sabha MPs resign

In a major blow to the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) led by Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, two Rajya Sabha members have resigned from both the party and their positions in the Upper House. Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has accepted their resignations, according to news agency PTI.

The MPs, Mopidevi Venkataramana and Beda Mastan Rao have stepped down despite Venkataramana’s term being set to continue until June 2026 and Rao’s until June 2028. Both politicians are expected to join the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), led by N Chandrababu Naidu, which recently achieved a significant victory in the Andhra Pradesh elections held alongside the general elections.

The two leaders have already met with TDP chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, fueling speculation about their imminent switch to the TDP.

Following these exits, YSRCP has nine MPs in the Upper House and four in the Lok Sabha. The two MPs who quit today are likely to be re-inducted as Rajya Sabha MPs, this time from TDP. This is also good news for TDP because it will reopen its account in the Upper House, where it has not had a seat since 2019.

Mr Rao was earlier with the TDP and represented Andhra’s Kavali constituency from 2009 to 2014. In 2019, he joined the YSRCP. Mr Venkataramana, on the other hand, was with the Congress. He is a two-time MLA who has served as a state minister in the government of Jagan Mohan Reddy’s father, the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

The departure of two Rajya Sabha MPs is a new setback for Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSRCP, which has been grappling with a wave of defections following a poor electoral performance. With only four Lok Sabha seats and a reduced Rajya Sabha presence, the party’s influence in Delhi is diminishing.
