NHRC demands report on police action during protests

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Kolkata Police, demanding an explanation regarding the alleged police excesses during the ‘Nabanna Abhijanprotest on August 27. The protest, a march to the Bengal secretariat, was organized by a group of students via social media.

The NHRC has requested a detailed report from the Kolkata Police within 14 days.

The commission expressed concerns that the police’s handling of the protestors may have violated human rights.

On August 27, the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ march was called demanding justice for the 31-year-old trainee doctor, capital punishment for the culprit, and the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Police resorted to large-scale lathi-charge, unleashed water cannons, and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the aggressive crowd who poured in from multiple converging points at Nabanna.

A total of 220 arrests were made in this connection in addition to 25 preventive arrests before the march. The city police said that had these preventive arrests not been made, the situation would have been worse.

Sayan Lahiri, a key organizer of the Nabanna Abhijan protest, has petitioned the Calcutta High Court for his immediate release following his arrest by city police. His counsel claims the arrest was made on false charges. The petition has been admitted and may be heard later on Friday. The clashes during the protest resulted in injuries to several protestors and policemen.
