Ahead of ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally, four student activists reportedly missing

Four student activists associated with the ‘Nabanna Abhijan‘ (March to Bengal Secretariat) have reportedly gone missing, according to Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly.

Adhikari claimed on Tuesday that the activists—identified as Subhojit Ghosh, Pulokesh Pandit, Goutam Senapati, and Pritam Sarkar—disappeared after distributing food to volunteers at Howrah station late Monday night. The activists were last seen around midnight, and their whereabouts remain unknown.

The circumstances surrounding their disappearance are under investigation, and Adhikari has called for urgent attention to the matter.

Adhikari said that the students cab neither be traced nor are they answering their phones. We apprehend that they may have been arrested or detained by the state police.

The ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ call has been given on social media by the students who have invited everyone to join in without carrying the banner of any political party. It is similar to the call given by women for a midnight march on the eve of Independence Day seeking justice for the RG Kar rape and murder victim.

The march is being conducted in protest against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this month.

In response to recent protests, the state police have begun installing aluminum guard walls at five key points leading to the state secretariat in Kolkata’s Mandirtala, adjacent to Howrah. These barriers, along with metal barricades welded to iron pipes and strategically placed water cannons, aim to prevent protesters from approaching the secretariat. Drones will be used for aerial surveillance, and several public bus routes have been diverted. Authorities anticipate potential traffic disruptions in various parts of the city due to the protest march.
