‘Threat to freedom’: Elon Musk’s fresh attack on Brazil amid feud over freezing X accounts

Elon Musk has escalated his criticism of Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, labeling him a “fake judge” and accusing him of deliberate interference in Brazil’s recent presidential election. Musk’s comments came after Moraes ordered a nationwide block on Musk’s social media platform, X, due to the company’s refusal to appoint a legal representative in Brazil.

Musk took to X to allege that Moraes engaged in “serious, repeated, and deliberate election interference” during the 2022 election. He further claimed that some former Twitter employees might have been complicit in these actions, urging anyone with evidence to share it publicly. Musk suggested that such actions could lead to up to 20 years in prison under Brazilian law.

Brazil is a significant market for X, with over 22 million users. The platform has been in ongoing conflict with Moraes over court orders to remove profiles promoting coup-related content and undermining democracy. In response, Musk has cautioned investors against engaging with Brazil, describing the regime as “oppressive” and warning of potential financial repercussions.

The Brazilian Supreme Federal Court has imposed fines totaling 18 million reais (approximately $3.2 million) on X for non-compliance. De Moraes accused the platform of enabling extremist and anti-democratic content and instructed the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) to block X within 24 hours. He also ordered Apple and Google to remove the X app from their app stores within five days.
