Kharge family land scandal: Fresh controversy hits Karnataka Congress

The Karnataka BJP has made serious allegations against AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge’s family, accusing them of receiving 19 acres of land for free from the Congress government. The land in question was reportedly allocated to the International Institute of Pali, Sanskrit, and Comparative Philosophy in Kalaburagi, which is run by the Siddhartha Vihara Trust, managed by Kharge’s family.

Lahar Singh Siroya, a BJP Rajya Sabha Member, took to X to allege that the Siddhartha Vihara Trust, overseen by Kharge’s family, received preferential treatment. “The trust’s trustees include Kharge’s wife, son-in-law, and two sons,” Siroya stated.

He further claimed, “The secretary of the Pali Institute is Radhakrishna, Kharge’s son-in-law and a sitting Congress MP from Kalaburagi. Recently, it was revealed that the Siddhartha Vihara Trust was allocated five acres of civic amenities land in the aerospace park near Bengaluru.”

Siroya detailed the timeline of the land grants, alleging, “In March 2014, the Congress government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah leased 16 acres of government land to the Pali Institute for 30 years. Subsequently, three additional acres were added, and by March 2017, all 19 acres were transferred free of cost to the Kharge family’s institute. Notably, Kharge’s son, Priyank Kharge, was a Cabinet Minister at the time, just as he is now.”

Siroya has called for an independent investigation into the land transfer, paralleling it with the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) land grant of five acres. He asserted, “I have faced personal attacks for exposing what I believe is a misuse of power and nepotism by the Kharge family. If they truly uphold the principles of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and Lord Gautama Siddhartha, they should voluntarily seek an investigation.”

Siroya also raised questions about potential political influence, asking, “Did Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s government come under pressure from Kharge to grant these lands, or was this an attempt by the Congress government to curry favor with Kharge?” The allegations have sparked a new round of political controversy in Karnataka.
