Govt to sign peace pact with 2 insurgent groups of Tripura

In a major step toward peace in Tripura, a Memorandum of Settlement will be signed on Wednesday in New Delhi between the central government, the Tripura government, and two prominent insurgent groups — the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF). The agreement will be formalized in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha.

The signing ceremony is scheduled to take place at the North Block in Delhi, with senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Tripura government also in attendance.

According to an official statement, this new settlement follows a previous tripartite agreement signed on August 10, 2019, which involved the Centre, the Tripura government, and a faction of the NLFT. Following that pact, 88 NLFT cadres surrendered their arms and ammunition and were provided benefits under the MHA’s Surrender-cum-Rehabilitation Scheme, 2018. These benefits included assistance with housing, government job recruitment, education, and skill development training.

Both the NLFT and ATTF have been banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act since 1997 due to their involvement in violent activities and insurgency, which led to numerous fatalities among security personnel and civilians between 2005 and 2015. Peace talks with the NLFT began in 2015, and there has been a notable decrease in violence since 2016.

The MHA has been actively working to realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed and peaceful northeast region, free from extremism and conflict. Under Modi’s leadership, the government has signed 12 significant agreements aimed at fostering peace and prosperity in the northeast, including three specific to Tripura.

These agreements have led to around 10,000 insurgent cadres abandoning their arms and reintegrating into mainstream society across northeastern states such as Assam and Tripura. The forthcoming settlement is expected to further bolster these efforts and contribute to lasting peace in the region.
