Two terrorists killed as Army foils infiltration bid along LoC in Rajouri district

The Indian Army successfully thwarted an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Nowshera Sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district early Monday morning, resulting in the death of two terrorists.

According to an Army statement, the operation was launched based on intelligence inputs from both the Jammu and Kashmir Police and other agencies, which indicated a potential infiltration attempt. The anti-infiltration operation was initiated on the night of September 8-9, 2024, in the general area of Lam, Nowshera.

“Two terrorists have been neutralized during the operation. A significant cache of war-like stores, including two AK-47 rifles and one pistol, has been recovered thus far,” the Army reported. “Security forces are maintaining heightened vigilance, utilizing aerial platforms for over-watch, and ongoing search operations are being conducted in the area.”

The Army’s proactive measures come amid a recent surge in infiltration attempts, often seen before the onset of winter when snow can block mountain passes. The region has been on high alert with several recent terrorist ambushes targeting the Army, security forces, and civilians across hilly districts including Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kathua, Reasi, and Udhampur.

In response to these threats, the Army has deployed over 4,000 trained soldiers, including elite Para commandos and mountain warfare specialists, to the densely forested regions of these districts. This deployment aims to counter the ambush tactics used by terrorists, who have often relied on the element of surprise to carry out attacks before disappearing into the forests.

The combined efforts of the Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and local village defense committees have significantly disrupted the terrorists’ operations, reducing their ability to execute surprise attacks. As a result, terrorists are increasingly engaging in direct exchanges of fire with security forces, either being neutralized or remaining on the run.

A senior police officer noted, “The intensified operations have limited the terrorists’ capacity to conduct stealth attacks, leading to more direct confrontations. This strategy has proven effective in neutralizing threats and maintaining security in the region.”

The heightened security measures are also timely, as the first phase of Assembly elections is set to take place on September 18 in the Chenab Valley and South Kashmir districts, adding to the importance of ensuring peace and order in the area.
