“Attacking” Lebanon to lay the groundwork for a potential entry into the country: Chief of the Israeli Army

Israel has instructed its military to prepare for a potential ground operation against Hezbollah in Lebanon, following escalating tensions in the region. This development comes as US President Joe Biden cautioned that an “all-out war” in the Middle East is a distinct possibility.

Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, the chief of the Israeli army, informed a tank brigade that they are “attacking” Lebanon to lay the groundwork for a potential entry into the country. This statement, made on Wednesday, indicates Israel’s readiness to escalate its military response against the Iran-backed group.

While Israel’s close ally, the United States, does not believe that an Israeli ground operation in Lebanon is “imminent,” Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh noted, “It doesn’t look like something is imminent.” However, President Biden’s remarks suggest a heightened concern about the situation, stating, “An all-out war is possible.”

In recent days, the Israeli military has conducted extensive operations, claiming to have struck over 2,000 Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. This surge in military activity follows Hezbollah’s recent attack on Israel’s Mossad spy agency headquarters near Tel Aviv, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing cross-border conflict that has intensified since the outbreak of the Gaza war nearly a year ago.

As tensions mount, the international community watches closely, concerned about the potential for further escalation in an already volatile region.
