EAM Jaishankar signs pact to protect marine biodiversity on high seas at UNGA

India has officially signed the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) agreement, a landmark international treaty aimed at protecting marine biodiversity in the high seas. The agreement was signed by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday, marking a significant step towards the conservation of oceans worldwide.

Minister Jaishankar expressed pride in India’s commitment, stating on X, “India is proud to join the BBNJ agreement, an important step towards ensuring that our oceans remain healthy and resilient.” This treaty, established under the Law of the Seas Treaty, aims to conserve marine life and promote sustainable use of resources beyond national territories, which can extend up to 200 nautical miles from shore.

The BBNJ agreement covers approximately two-thirds of the world’s oceans and has been in the making for nearly two decades, finally being adopted internationally last year. It prohibits destructive fishing practices and aims to curb pollution in these vital marine areas.

One of the critical components of the agreement is that no country can claim sovereign rights over marine resources found in the high seas, ensuring equitable sharing of benefits derived from these resources.

India’s Cabinet had previously approved participation in this vital agreement in July. Minister of State for Earth Sciences, Jitendra Singh emphasized, “India remains committed and proactive to the global cause of environmental conservation and sustainable development.”

Earth Sciences Secretary M Ravichandran added that the BBNJ agreement enhances India’s strategic presence in areas beyond its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), further strengthening the nation’s marine conservation efforts.

This treaty is a significant move for India, showcasing its dedication to global environmental initiatives and the sustainable management of ocean resources.
