RG Kar Hospital scam: ED to start probe by filing Enforcement Case Information Report

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated the process to start an investigation into financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, involving former Principal Sandip Ghosh.

The ED has filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) based on an FIR lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which began its probe last week following an order from a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court.

The ED, the financial investigation arm of the Union Ministry of Finance, will examine the money laundering aspects of the case. This development adds to the mounting legal troubles faced by Ghosh, who has been under scrutiny for alleged financial misconduct during his tenure.

This will add to more trouble for the former and controversial Principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, Sandip Ghosh.

With the ED now involved, former RG Kar Medical College Principal Sandip Ghosh and his associates will face dual investigations—one from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and another from the ED.

In addition to Ghosh, former Medical Superintendent & Vice Principal Sanjay Vashisth and Forensic Medicine Department demonstrator Debasish Som have been questioned by the CBI. The FIR names Ghosh along with three business entities: Maa Tara Traders, Ehsan Café, and Kham Louha, which are suspected of benefiting from the alleged financial irregularities.

The CBI’s findings suggest that Maa Tara Traders had a near-monopoly on supplying medical equipment due to its proprietor’s ties with Ghosh. The CBI is investigating 15 specific charges related to financial misconduct, including the awarding of contracts without proper approvals from the state health department and the college council.
