Three militants killed in twin Kupwara operations

In a successful anti-infiltration operation, the Army neutralized three terrorists on Thursday in the Machil and Tangdhar areas of Kupwara district, North Kashmir.

The operation, conducted jointly by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police, was initiated based on intelligence reports about possible infiltration attempts. The action took place during the night of August 28-29, 2024, in the Tangdhar region, according to a statement from the Army’s official handle on X.

“Suspicious movement was observed in bad weather and was engaged with effective firing by own troops; two terrorists are likely to have been neutralized,” the post read. They further added that the operation is still in progress.

Both operations in Tad village at Kushal post in Tangdhar and at Kumkadi post in the Machil sector were launched late evening on Wednesday after suspicious movements by terrorists were observed. Search operations at both locations are still ongoing; however, bad weather and heavy rains are hampering the efforts.

There have been a series of encounters between terrorists and security forces across Jammu and Kashmir in the recent past in which many terrorists and their commanders have been eliminated. Security forces have also taken casualties.

Initially confined to Poonch and Rajouri districts, terrorist activities are now spreading across other areas of Jammu, areas that were relatively free from such incidents until a few years ago like the Chenab valley that was declared militancy-free, and Udhampur and Kathua.

The highly trained terrorists have been ambushing vehicles and using grenades and armor-piercing bullets, as well as M4 assault rifles.
