Jay Shah becomes youngest-ever ICC chairman

With the elevation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah as Chairman of ICC, the stage is set for the elevation of Arun Jaitley’s son Rohan Jaitley as Chairman of ICC. BJP which attacks Opposition parties for dynasty rule is keeping silent on BJP leaders’ kids placed in top posts in Cricket administration. Interestingly both Jay Shah and Rohan Jaitley had no touch with the Cricket administration or game till BJP came to power in 2014.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah will take over as the next chairman of the ICC in December after he emerged as the sole nominee for the high-profile job, the global governing body for cricket announced on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old will succeed incumbent chairman Greg Barclay, who decided against running for the post for a third consecutive term of two years. Shah has become the youngest ever to hold the position.

Shah will leave his current position as BCCI secretary, which he has held since 2019, in the Board’s Annual General Meeting to be held towards the end of the next month or in October. Shah is currently the head of ICC’s most powerful sub-committee, the Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA), a role that he took over in 2022.

Rohan Jaitley Set to Succeed Jay Shah as BCCI Secretary

Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) president Rohan Jaitley has emerged as the strongest contender to replace Shah as the new BCCI secretary and there is a general consensus over his name in the Indian board. DDCA faced a lot of allegations of rampant corruption during Arun Jaitley’s tenure. Cricketers Bishan Singh Bedi and Kirti Azad have many times raised the blatant corruption in DDCA.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was head of the Gujarat Cricket Association during his tenure as Chief Minister and later placed Amit Shah as head of the Gujarat’s cricket body. After the BJP came to power in Centre, son Jay Shah was placed into the cricket body. Rohan became involved in cricket administration about four years back when he was elected as the new president of the DDCA, a position his father held for 14 years, and earlier this year, he was re-elected unopposed for a second term. Under his administration, Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium hosted five ODI World Cup matches last year.
