Bengal Police using force against protestors; BJP claims firing

As the BJP’s 12-hourBengal Bandh‘ continues, party leader Priyangu Pandey has reported a violent incident in North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. On Wednesday, Pandey alleged that members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) attacked his vehicle in the Bharpara area.

According to Pandey, the attackers fired multiple rounds at his car and threw bombs, creating a dangerous situation. He claimed that the assailants discharged 6-7 rounds of gunfire and hurled explosives at his vehicle.

“Today I was going to our leader Arjun Singh’s residence. We moved some distance and the road was blocked by a jetting machine from Bhatpara Municipality. The moment our car stopped, around 50-60 people targeted the vehicle. 7 to 8 bombs were thrown at my vehicle and then 6-7 round firing was done. This is a joint conspiracy of TMC and the Police. They planned my murder. The police supported and gave information. My security was withdrawn and then this incident happened,” he said.

Police recovered empty bomb shells from near the spot where BJP leader Priyangu Pandey was attacked in Bhatpara of North 24 Parganas Priyangu Pandey claimed that several people attacked and fired on his car, earlier today, in Bhatpara of North 24 Parganas.

Former Lok Sabha member from Barrackpore and BJP leader Arjun Singh claimed that the injured supporter along with some of his associates were stopped on the road by the Trinamool Congress activists and were fired upon.

“The ruling party activists have been creating terror in the area since morning to foil the strike, which is spontaneously supported by common people,” Singh said. However, the local ruling party leadership has denied the charges.

Meanwhile, in Cooch Behar district, two BJP legislators namely Malati Rava Roy from Tufanganj and Nikhil Ranjan Dey from Cooch Behar (South) were detained by police, as they along with their associates were protesting at the bus depot of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC).

The police were seen dragging and pushing them in the prison van. As their associates protested a minor scuffle broke out between the cops and the striking supporters.

Several BJP leaders including Locket Chatterjee, Rahul Sinha, and Roopa Ganguly were detained by the police for their protest. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari joined the protesters and said the party would ‘stall’ West Bengal if the police ‘repression‘ doesn’t stop immediately.

BJP West Bengal announced a 12-hour Bangla Bandh on Wednesday, August 28, in response to alleged police brutality during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan‘ protest. The bandh, scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., was sparked by student demonstrations against the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Authorities resorted to using water cannons and tear gas to control the crowd.

The incident underscores the escalating tensions in the region amid the ongoing bandh, which has sparked widespread disruptions and clashes. The BJP has condemned the violence, while the TMC has yet to respond to the allegations.
