RG Kar financial scam: Investigators analyzing data, anticipate crucial evidence

A special court in Kolkata has ordered the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and three others to be held in judicial custody until October 7 in connection with a significant financial irregularities case. The co-accused include Afsar Ali, Ghosh’s personal bodyguard, and business owners Suman Hazra and Biplab Sinha, who supplied medicines and medical equipment to the institution.

On Monday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) informed the court that the digital cloning of 18 electronic devices, including mobile phones, laptops, and memory cards, seized during the investigation has been completed. Investigators are currently analyzing the data, anticipating that crucial evidence related to the financial misconduct will emerge from this examination.

Ghosh and his associates were arrested by the CBI on August 19 as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the medical college. The CBI has since linked Ghosh to a separate case involving the rape and murder of a junior doctor from RG Kar, leading to further scrutiny of his activities.

In addition to the CBI’s ongoing investigation, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated its own inquiry, having filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) related to the case. The CBI’s probe is both court-directed and monitored, while the ED’s involvement is based on independent findings. Both agencies have reportedly gathered incriminating documents, conducted raids, and questioned various individuals connected to the case.

The allegations against Ghosh include manipulating the tendering process to favor ineligible suppliers and contractors, bypassing regulations for infrastructure-related work orders, and smuggling biomedical waste and organs from unidentified bodies at the hospital’s morgue. As the investigations proceed, both the CBI and ED are working to uncover the full extent of the alleged financial irregularities and associated criminal activities.

The case has raised significant concerns regarding governance and accountability within medical institutions, highlighting the need for stringent oversight in public health administration.
