J&K polls: Over 25.78 lakh voters to decide the fate of 239 candidates

Jammu and Kashmir is set for the second phase of its Assembly elections, with polling scheduled for Wednesday across 26 seats in six districts spanning both the Jammu region and the Kashmir Valley. Campaigning officially ended on Monday evening.

Voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., as per the Election Commission’s statement.

According to the Election Commission, over 25.78 lakh voters are eligible to cast their ballots in this phase, which includes districts from both divisions: Ganderbal, Srinagar, and Budgam in Kashmir, and Reasi, Rajouri, and Poonch in Jammu. A total of 239 candidates are contesting for these seats, with 93 candidates in Srinagar district, followed by 46 in Budgam, 34 in Rajouri, 25 in Poonch, 21 in Ganderbal, and 20 in Reasi.

The breakdown of seats in the Kashmir division includes Kangan (ST) with six candidates, Ganderbal (15), Hazratbal (13), Khanyar (10), Habbakadal (16), Lal Chowk (10), Channapora (eight), Zadibal (10), Eidgah (13), Central Shalteng (13), Budgam (eight), Beerwah (12), Khansahib (10), Chrar-i-Sharief (10), and Chadoora (six). In the Jammu division, the 11 contested seats feature Gulabgarh (ST) with six candidates, Reasi (seven), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi (seven), Kalakote-Sunderbani (11), Nowshera (five), Rajouri (ST) (eight), Budhal (ST) (four), Thannamandi (ST) (six), Surankote (ST) (eight), Poonch Haveli (eight), and Mendhar (ST) (nine).

As per the latest electoral rolls, a total of 25,78,099 voters are eligible, comprising 13,12,730 male voters, 12,65,316 female voters, and 53 voters from the third gender. Notably, there are 1,20,612 voters aged 18 to 19, including 11,294 males and 10,065 females, making this an important phase for first-time voters. Additionally, 19,201 Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and 20,880 voters aged over 85 will participate.

Srinagar district has 7,76,674 registered voters, with a near-equal split between male (3,87,722) and female (3,88,922) voters. Rajouri has 4,92,008 voters, while Budgam has 5,11,864. Poonch features 3,52,330 registered voters across its constituencies, and Reasi has 2,37,205 voters.

To facilitate a smooth voting process, the Election Commission has established a total of 3,502 polling stations across the 26 Assembly constituencies, including 1,056 urban and 2,446 rural polling stations. Special provisions include 157 unique polling stations, such as Pink Polling Stations managed by women, stations staffed by specially-abled persons, and border polling stations.
