The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has launched a series of raids across Tamil Nadu, targeting 12 locations including Chennai, Kanyakumari, and Pudukkottai, as part of an ongoing investigation into recruitment activities associated with the banned terrorist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir (HUT). The operations began early Tuesday morning.

The NIA’s actions come after it took over the case from the Tamil Nadu Police. Hizb ut-Tahrir is known for its goal of establishing an Islamic state governed by its own constitution, authored by its founder, Taqi al-Din al-Nabhani.

In a significant development earlier in the investigation, the NIA arrested Aziz Ahamed, also known as Jaleel Aziz Ahmed, at Bengaluru International Airport on August 31. Ahamed was attempting to flee the country at the time of his arrest, marking a crucial step in the NIA’s efforts to dismantle the group’s operations in India.

The agency continues to delve into the wider network linked to Hizb ut-Tahrir, focusing on its attempts to threaten national security through radicalization and recruitment strategies.

Prior to the NIA’s involvement, Tamil Nadu Police arrested six individuals believed to be sympathizers of Hizb ut-Tahrir on August 1, following intelligence inputs. Among those arrested was engineering graduate Hameed Hussai, along with his father and brother, under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Authorities identified Hussai as the mastermind behind recruitment efforts for the banned organization, noting that he had been sharing videos on social media promoting an Islamic Caliphate and criticizing the democratic process.

As the investigation unfolds, the NIA aims to uncover the full extent of Hizb ut-Tahrir’s activities and its potential impact on national security.
