Protests erupt for Imran Khan’s release during UN General Assembly

Supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan gathered for a protest on Friday, demanding his release while Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The demonstration, organized by supporters of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, featured participants rallying behind a large flag emblazoned with Khan’s image, calling for an end to the crackdown on opposition voices in Pakistan.

The PTI supporters were notably separated from a larger group of yellow-clad protesters affiliated with the Falun Gong movement, who were demonstrating against the Beijing regime. This group expressed their support for Muhammad Yunus, the de facto Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Wearing t-shirts emblazoned with their party’s insignia, these demonstrators waved Bangladeshi flags and held posters featuring Khaleda Zia, the leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, alongside Yunus.

While the protests unfolded outside, Sharif criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a pointed speech, but his motorcade took a route away from the demonstrations, leaving him unaware of the unfolding dissent.

Imran Khan, currently imprisoned on charges of corruption and violations of state secrets, faces significant legal challenges, with several members of his party also detained under similar circumstances. Khan has been barred from participating in the upcoming February elections, with protesters labeling the recent electoral process as “rigged” and calling for its annulment.

The protests reflect ongoing political turmoil in Pakistan as supporters of Khan seek to amplify their demands for justice and political reform on an international stage.
