In a significant blow to terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, police arrested six associates of a militant group. They seized a substantial cache of arms and ammunition in Pulwama district on Saturday.

This operation underscores the ongoing threat posed by terror organizations and their attempts to recruit local youth.

The arrests were made in Awantipora, where police acted on specific intelligence indicating that a Pakistan-based militant from the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) was actively working to identify and radicalize young individuals to join militant ranks. According to police officials, these individuals were being supplied with firearms and explosives to carry out violent acts before officially becoming part of the terror network.

The police initiated an investigation by registering an FIR under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Indian Arms Act. It was discovered that the militant handler had coordinated with local operatives, including those currently imprisoned, to target vulnerable youth in the Tral area and Kulgam district. These youths were reportedly instructed to engage in violent activities, such as targeted killings and attacks on security personnel and non-local laborers.

The scale of the operation is alarming, with police recovering a staggering array of weapons: five improvised explosive devices (IEDs), 30 detonators, 17 batteries, two pistols, three pistol magazines, 25 live rounds, four hand grenades, and a cash amount of Rs 20,000. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities anticipate further arrests and recoveries.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent menace of terrorism and the need for vigilance. The recruitment and radicalization of youth by terror groups not only jeopardizes national security but also destroys the fabric of society. The government and security forces must remain resolute in their efforts to dismantle these networks and protect innocent lives.
