Massive Rs.130 cr of illegal funds seized from 23 government employees amid J&K polls

In a decisive move to uphold the integrity of the electoral process, the Jammu and Kashmir Election Office has suspended 23 government officials for violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by participating in election campaigning and related political activities. Additionally, six contractual and ad-hoc employees have been disengaged for similar infractions, according to an official statement released on Sunday.

The Election Office also announced that 20 employees have been reassigned to different locations due to complaints regarding their partisan behavior during the ongoing Assembly elections.

As part of the election enforcement measures, a significant total of Rs.130 crore in illegal funds has been seized by various agencies in Jammu and Kashmir since the commencement of the 2024 Assembly elections. The Police Department leads these efforts with the highest seizure amounting to Rs.107.50 crore, followed by the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) department at Rs.9.88 crore, and the State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) at Rs.8.03 crore. Other notable seizures include Rs.2.06 crore by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Rs.87 lakh by the Income Tax Department, and Rs.50 lakh by the State Excise Department.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P K Pole reported that approximately 7,088 permissions have been granted to various political parties and candidates for activities such as rallies, processions, and the display of campaign materials.

To date, there have been 1,263 reported MCC violations, of which 600 have been resolved through investigations, while 364 are still under review. Notices have been issued to 115 candidates, political parties, and media outlets for reported violations.

The CEO emphasized that enforcement agencies have registered 32 FIRs as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal activities, including the transport of drugs, cash, and liquor during the election period.
