Joint Parliamentary Committee on Waqf Bill to hold discussion in cities

In a significant move to refine the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) is set to conduct a series of informal discussions across five states from September 26 to October 1. These consultations aim to engage various stakeholders in a comprehensive dialogue on the management of registered Waqf properties in India.

The series will kick off in Mumbai on September 26, where representatives from the Maharashtra government, the Ministry of Minority Affairs, and the Maharashtra Waqf Board will convene. This initial meeting is expected to lay the groundwork for subsequent discussions, focusing on vital issues such as transparency, efficiency, and empowerment in Waqf management.

The following day, the JPC will travel to Ahmedabad, Gujarat, for further discussions that will include participants from the Gujarat government and the Gujarat Waqf Board, alongside legal professionals from the Bar Council and local lawyers’ associations. Stakeholders will provide insights on the potential impact of the proposed reforms on the management of Waqf properties in the region.

Hyderabad will host the next round of consultations on September 28, involving key participants from the Waqf Boards of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, as well as the State Minority Commissions. The Chhattisgarh Waqf Board is also expected to contribute to these discussions, given the region’s rich Waqf heritage.

The committee will continue its journey to Chennai, Tamil Nadu, for meetings on September 30, before concluding in Bengaluru, Karnataka, on October 1. Throughout these engagements, critical aspects of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill will be examined, including the digitization of records, enhanced auditing processes, stricter legal measures against encroachments, and the decentralization of Waqf management.

The JPC’s nationwide consultations are designed to gather feedback from a diverse array of participants, including government officials, legal experts, Waqf Board members, and community representatives. This inclusive approach aims to ensure a robust and effective reform of the Waqf Act, addressing the concerns and needs of stakeholders across various states and Union Territories.

As discussions unfold, the JPC hopes to build a comprehensive framework that will enhance the governance and management of Waqf properties, ultimately benefiting the communities they serve.
