PM Modi’s surprise meet with Ukraine President Zelenskyy to discuss peace formula

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, marking their second discussion in about a month. The meeting comes after Modi’s historic visit to Ukraine on August 23, where he expressed India’s commitment to facilitating an early resolution to the ongoing conflict.

During that visit, PM Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Ukraine since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992. Following the meeting, both leaders issued a joint statement outlining their mutual interest in elevating bilateral relations from a comprehensive partnership to a strategic partnership.

The statement emphasized their commitment to enhancing cooperation based on mutual trust, respect, and openness. Modi and Zelenskyy reaffirmed their dedication to upholding international law principles, including the respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty of states, and agreed on the importance of maintaining closer bilateral dialogue on these issues.

The Indian side reiterated its principled stance on resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy. India participated in the Summit on Peace in Ukraine held in Burgenstock, Switzerland, in June 2024, an engagement that Ukraine welcomed. The leaders highlighted the significance of high-level Indian participation in future peace summits.

PM Modi stressed the need for sincere engagement among all stakeholders to develop innovative solutions that would be broadly accepted and contribute to the swift restoration of peace. He reiterated India’s readiness to assist in any way possible to facilitate a peaceful resolution.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has lasted over two years, leading to severe humanitarian consequences. In a related context, the recent Quad Leaders’ Summit, hosted by US President Joe Biden, underscored the importance of adherence to international law and respect for sovereignty. The leaders expressed deep concern over the humanitarian impacts of the war and reiterated the need for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in line with the principles of the UN Charter.

Prime Minister Modi, during his three-day visit to the United States, held bilateral meetings with various leaders, including President Biden. The discussions reflect India’s growing role in global diplomacy and its commitment to peace and stability in the region.
