Days after India abstained on UNGA resolution against Israel, Modi reaffirms support to people of Palestine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the sidelines of the United Nations’ “Summit of the Future” in New York, where he expressed deep concern regarding the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the deteriorating security situation in the region.

This comes just days after India abstained in the UN General Assembly on a resolution that demanded that Israel bring an end, “without delay”, to its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory within 12 months.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people, emphasizing the need for continued humanitarian assistance. He reiterated India’s long-standing, principled position on the Israel-Palestine conflict, calling for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and a return to dialogue and diplomacy.

In a post on social media platform X, Modi stated, “Met President Mahmoud Abbas in New York. Reiterated India’s support for the early restoration of peace and stability in the region. Exchanged views on further strengthening the long-standing friendship with the people of Palestine.”

The Prime Minister underscored that a two-state solution remains essential for achieving lasting peace and stability in the region. He recalled that India was one of the first countries to recognize Palestine and conveyed India’s ongoing support for Palestine’s membership in the United Nations.

The discussions between the two leaders also covered various aspects of India-Palestine bilateral relations, including India’s support for Palestine at the UN and ongoing assistance in education, health, and capacity-building initiatives. Both leaders expressed their commitment to deepening the bilateral relationship further.

As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to escalate, India’s position reflects a commitment to fostering dialogue and cooperation, highlighting its role as a supportive ally to the Palestinian cause on the international stage.
